Awning and Casement Windows
Hinged at the top or the side and held open on a stay, awning and casement windows have always been popular with New Zealanders and suit modern and traditional homes alike. Ours improve on the traditional design with smooth curves, stylish contours and enhanced practicality.
How an Awning Window Works
An awning window is hinged along the top edge and opens outward from the bottom, held at the angle you choose by a friction stay. Because the glass tilts over the opening like a small awning, rain runs off the outside of the sash rather than into the room, so it can stay open in a shower. A casement window is the same sash hinged at the side instead, opening outward like a door. Casements catch a breeze from the side and open wider; awnings are the better all-weather ventilator. Most NuStyle customers use awnings in bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens, and casements where they want a wide opening or a particular look.
Why Auckland Homeowners Choose Them
- Ventilation in any weather. Leave an awning window open on a wet night and the room still airs without water on the sill.
- Security while open. Fit a security stay and the sash is restricted to a 100 mm opening, so you can ventilate a ground-floor room with the house locked.
- Child safety. A non-releasable safety stay does the same job in an upstairs bedroom, and cannot be undone by small hands.
- A clean look. Slim aluminium frames carry big double-glazed panes, so the window reads as glass rather than frame, on a villa or a new build.
- Easy to clean. The sash opens far enough to reach the outside of the glass from inside on most sizes.
Configurations and Options
Awning and casement sashes are combined with fixed panes in almost any arrangement: a single awning over a fixed light, a run of three awnings across a kitchen, a pair of casements flanking a picture window, or a full-height feature window with an awning at the bottom for airflow. We draw the layout with you during the measure so the mullions line up with the architecture of the house.
Every window has the option of double or single glazing. Choose Low E glass for warmth, laminated glass for sound, or an obscure glass such as Stippolite or Etchlite for a bathroom. Frames can be standard or thermally broken, and come in any of our standard Dulux colours or an anodised finish on the colours page. Every window comes with its stays and handles; restrictor stays are an optional extra, fitted where and when required, and all of it is covered on the hardware page.
Awning Windows in a Replacement
Awning windows are the usual choice when we replace old timber or early aluminium windows, because they fit the same openings, look right on an older house, and immediately fix the draughts. The window replacement page explains how the installation day runs.
The ventilation an opening window provides matters for the health of the house: Tenancy Services' healthy homes ventilation standard requires openable windows in every habitable room of a rental, and the same logic applies to the home you live in.

Awning Window Questions
Awning or casement: which should I choose?
Awning for rooms you want to ventilate in all weather and for security while open. Casement for a wide opening, a side breeze, or a traditional look on a villa or bungalow. Many homes use both.
How far does an awning window open?
Far enough to clean the outside of the glass on most sizes. With a security stay or safety stay fitted, the opening is limited to 100 mm, which is enough for a steady flow of air.
Can an awning window be big?
Within limits set by the weight of double glazing on the stays. For a large opening we combine an opening sash with fixed glass, or suggest a bifold or sliding window instead.
Do awning windows leak in heavy rain?
Not when they are made and installed properly. The sash seals against the frame when closed, and the outward tilt sheds water when open. The flashing around the frame is what keeps a wall dry, which is why we install our own windows.
