Repair or Replace?

New windows are tempting because they offer so much: smoother operation, lower maintenance, fewer draughts, easier cleaning and a warmer house. They are also a real investment, so it is worth being honest about whether the old ones have reached the end. Three questions decide it.

1. Are the old windows a hassle?

Do they lift, swing or slide easily, or do you hesitate to open them when you want air? Timber windows need scraping and painting every few years or they rot. Is cleaning them so awkward you avoid it?

2. Are the rooms comfortable?

Single-pane windows leave rooms chilly in winter and overheated on a sunny afternoon. Double glazing greatly improves comfort: it reduces cold draughts and the chill off cold glass, and with Low E glass holds the heat in while letting the light through.

3. Are they worth repairing?

Old windows can almost always be restored if you have the time and can find the parts, but it is not always worth it. Rot, once started, is hard to stop. Worn hinges on sagging casements rarely come right. Fogged double glazing cannot be fixed, only re-glazed. And replacement hardware for an old aluminium system can be impossible to find. When two or three of those apply, replacement is the better spend.

All at Once, or One Side at a Time?

Balance the house's appearance with your budget. Even with a close colour match, new windows look slightly different from old ones, and Low E glass has a faint tint that clear glass does not, so replacing one or two windows in a conspicuous spot can look odd. A good strategy is to replace all the windows on one side of the house, or on one level of a two-storey home, to keep a consistent look. Often the windows on the weather side have deteriorated far faster than the rest, and that side is the place to start.

How a Replacement Day Runs

  1. Free measure. We look at every window and door, the flashings and the sills, and talk through awning, sliding or bifold windows, glass and colour. A clear quote follows within a few days, a week at most.
  2. Final measure and manufacture. Once you accept the quote and pay a deposit, our installer does a final measure and the joinery is made to those exact sizes in Papatoetoe.
  3. Installation. A few days before, we ring to arrange access. On the day our team removes the old joinery, fits the new window into the same opening, flashes and seals it, refits the trims and leaves the room tidy. Most rooms are done in a day, and the house is never left open overnight. Lead times are usually 4 to 6 weeks; talk to the friendly staff at NuStyle for an accurate idea of current lead times for your job. We will not open up your home in bad weather.
  4. Guarantee. Our 5-year guarantee covers the product and the installation, with after-sales care if anything needs attention.

Consent and the Healthy Homes Standards

As a general rule, replacing your ageing windows or upgrading to new windows does not require a building consent if there are no structural changes. Our guide to building consent for replacing windows has more, and we are happy to talk it through at the measure. For landlords, the healthy homes standards require draught stopping and openable windows in every habitable room, and well-sealed new joinery with opening sashes helps meet both.

Replacement Questions

Can you replace timber windows with aluminium?

Yes, and it is the most common job we do on villas, bungalows and 1960s homes. The new aluminium frame goes into the existing opening, and we can match the look of the old sash layout where that matters.

Do I have to move out?

No. We work room by room, each opening is closed up the same day, and the house is secure every night.

What happens to the old windows?

We remove and dispose of them. Aluminium is recycled.

Will new windows fix the condensation?

No. New windows still get condensation. It is a ventilation issue rather than a window issue, so airing the house and using the extractor fans is what makes the difference. Our guide to condensation on aluminium windows explains what to do.
