The Everyday Door

A hinge door is the plain, strong, swinging door that most houses need in several places: from the laundry to the clothesline, from the garage to the side path, from a bedroom to an ensuite courtyard, or as the back door. It can be glazed to let light into a hallway or solid for privacy, and a cat door can be fitted at the factory. As a pair, hinge doors become French doors.

Options

  • Custom sizes to suit the opening, from a narrow service door to a wide single leaf.
  • Glazed, solid or part-glazed, with obscure or laminated glass where privacy or noise matters.
  • Double or single glazing in a glazed door, with Low E glass available.
  • Lever or pull handles with multipoint locking, key both sides or key and turn - see the hardware page.
  • Any of our standard Dulux colours and the anodised finishes on the colours page, in standard or thermally broken frames.
  • Inward or outward opening, left or right hand hung.

Security and Weather

A hinge door seals against the frame on all four sides when it is closed, and every one we make has a sill, because a sill is required for weathertightness. That makes it a good door on a weather-exposed wall. A security door can be hung in front of it, which lets you leave the main door open for air with the house locked. Outward-opening doors in a bedroom or living room also serve as an escape route, and the Building Code sets minimum clear widths for accessible routes in clause D1 Access routes that we can size a door to meet.

Replacement

A new hinge door usually goes into the existing frame opening and takes our installers a morning. If the old door is timber and the frame has moved, we make the new door and frame to the opening as it is now. See window and door replacement.

Try a Hinge Door in 3D

Set the width and height, pick a frame colour from our standard Dulux range, swing the door open and look at it from inside and out. It works on a phone and a computer, and you can send the design with your enquiry.

Hinge Door Questions

Can a hinge door be solid rather than glazed?

Yes. Solid, fully glazed or part-glazed.

Which way should the door open?

Outward is usual on an external door for weather and to keep the room clear; inward where a path or a deck runs close to the wall. We check both during the measure.

Does a hinge door need a sill?

Yes. A sill is required for weathertightness, so every hinge door we make has one.

Can you fit a cat door?

Yes, into a solid lower panel or the glass, at the factory.
