Aluminium Bifold Windows
Bifold windows fold easily and elegantly to open a whole wall of glass, turning a kitchen window into a servery and a living room into part of the deck. The panels are bottom rolling, on a sill that keeps the weather out, with sleek low-profile handles.
The Servery Window
The most popular use of a bifold window is above a kitchen bench that backs onto a deck or an outdoor dining area. Fold the panels away and the bench becomes a bar: plates go out, drinks come in, and whoever is cooking is part of the conversation outside. Our Dannemora project has exactly this, a bifold servery in matt black between the kitchen and an outdoor kitchen with timber bar stools, and it is the window the owners use most.
The same window works anywhere a solid wall of opening glass makes sense: a lounge onto a courtyard, a bedroom onto a balcony, a home office that wants to feel like a verandah in summer.
How NuStyle Bifold Windows Work
- Bottom-rolling panels. The panels run on rollers in the bottom of the frame, so their weight is carried by the sill.
- A proper sill. A bifold window needs a sill for weathertightness, so every one we make has one.
- Fold left, right or both. Panels stack to one side or split to both, and one panel can be hinged to open on its own for everyday ventilation.
- Double or single glazing, with Low E or laminated glass available.
- Sleek low-profile handles and multipoint locking so the folded wall is as secure as a fixed one. See the hardware page.
Bifold Window or Bifold Door?
Choose a window when the opening sits above a bench, a half-wall or a balustrade, so the sill stays at bench height. Choose a bifold door when you want to walk through the opening. The two are built on the same system and are often used together on one wall, a bifold door from the dining room beside a bifold window from the kitchen, so the whole side of the house opens up.
Colours, Frames and Installation
Bifold windows come in all our standard Dulux colours and the anodised finishes on the colours page, in standard or thermally broken frames. They are made to measure in our Papatoetoe factory and installed by our own team, who set the head and sill dead level so the panels fold and lock without fuss. A bifold window is a larger opening than most windows, so on an existing house we check the lintel during the measure; a new or wider opening in a house of up to two storeys is generally covered by the Building Act's exemption for window and door work, but it must still meet the Building Code, which means a properly sized lintel.

Bifold Window Questions
How many panels can a bifold window have?
Commonly two to five, stacking to one side or splitting to both. Beyond that the opening is usually better treated as a bifold door. We draw the layout with you.
Does a bifold window seal as well as a fixed window?
When it is closed and locked, yes. The panels compress against weather seals and the multipoint lock pulls them tight. Choosing a thermally broken frame and Low E glass makes it as warm as any other window in the house.
Does a bifold window need a sill?
Yes. A bifold window needs a sill for weathertightness, and ours are bottom rolling, so the panels run on that sill.
Do I need a building consent?
As a general rule, replacing your ageing windows or upgrading to new windows does not require a building consent if there are no structural changes. A new or wider opening is structural work, so talk to us and your builder first; it needs a properly sized lintel, and we can work with your builder on it. There is more in our guide to building consent for window and door work.
