Aluminium French Doors
Traditional French doors in unlimited window combinations and a wide variety of colours. They bring the outside in with traditional design and form, in door panels sized to suit the style and proportions of your home, with side windows built into the frame if you want them.
What Makes a French Door
A French door is a pair of glazed hinged doors that meet in the middle of the opening with no post between them. Open both and the full width is clear; open one and you have an ordinary door. Because the panels are mostly glass, a French door lets light into a room the way a window does and lets people through the way a door does, which is why it has been the traditional door from a dining room to a garden for a century. In aluminium it keeps that look with none of the upkeep timber needs.
Where French Doors Suit
- Villas and bungalows, where a pair of glazed doors matches the proportions of the house better than a wide slider.
- Bedrooms onto a verandah or balcony, where one door is used most days and both on a warm night.
- Smaller openings that are not wide enough for a bifold or a stacker to earn their keep.
- Where you want the doors to open outward, clear of furniture and curtains, or inward on an exposed wall.
Options and Combinations
The glazing layout is yours to choose: a single pane per door, a glazed upper and a solid lower panel, or divided lights for a traditional look. Side windows (sidelights) on one or both sides and a top light can be included in the same frame, which is how a French door becomes a full-width glazed wall. Each panel has the option of double or single glazing, with Low E, laminated safety or obscure glass to suit the room, in any of our standard Dulux colours on the colours page, and in standard or thermally broken frames.
Hardware includes lever handles with a multipoint lock, and a flush bolt on the second door so one leaf stays fixed until you want it. See the hardware page.
Replacing Old Timber French Doors
Timber French doors are a common replacement job on older Auckland homes: they drop, bind, let in draughts and need painting. An aluminium pair goes into the same opening, seals properly, and never needs a paintbrush. The window and door replacement page explains the process. If the opening is being enlarged, the structural work must meet the Building Code even where no consent is needed; the exemption for window and door work on building.govt.nz explains when one is.

French Door Questions
Do French doors open in or out?
Either. Outward keeps the room clear and sheds water better on an exposed wall; inward suits a narrow deck or a balcony with a balustrade close by.
Can one door be used on its own?
Yes. A flush bolt holds the second leaf closed, so the first works as a normal door and the pair opens when you release the bolt.
Are French doors secure?
The active door has a multipoint lock and the second leaf is bolted top and bottom. A security door can be fitted in front for ventilation with the house locked.
French doors or a sliding door?
French for a traditional house and a smaller opening; a sliding door where there is no swing space or you want a wider opening.
