A Family Home in Dannemora
Seamless aluminium joinery meets striking design. Matt black windows and doors on a white weatherboard and schist two-storey home, with a vivid teal double entrance door that the whole street knows.
The Brief
A new two-storey family home in Dannemora, East Auckland, on a sloping site with a pool at the back and a reserve beyond. The owners wanted slim black joinery that would disappear against the white weatherboard and let the schist stone and the view do the talking, big openings onto the deck and the pool, a kitchen that served straight through to an outdoor bar, and a front door nobody would forget.
What We Made
- Double entrance door in a vivid teal with a full-height sidelight each side, long black pull handles and a keypad smart lock, set between schist pillars under the entry porch.
- Bifold doors from the living room to the deck, folding right back so the room and the deck become one space.
- Bifold servery window from the kitchen to the outdoor bar, with timber bar stools on the deck side.
- Awning windows throughout, including two on the schist wall under the timber fascia and one over the kitchen bench.
- Sliding windows on the side elevations and in the lounge, with a wide one framing the view to the hills.
- Sliding door with a built-in cat door onto the deck.
- Hinge door on the side path, made with a louvre vent panel for the pool pump.
- Fixed and raked windows: a tall fixed pane on the gable over the pool, a pair of windows above the stairwell, raked windows following the roofline beside the spiral stair, and a small obscure-glazed window in the bathroom.
Everything is double glazed, powder coated in Matt Black / Ebony (the entrance door in a custom teal), with black handles and stays, and installed by our own team. The glass is from Metro Performance Glass; see the glass page for the options we specified and the colours page for the range.
Why It Works
Black joinery on white weatherboard is the most popular combination on new Auckland homes for a reason: the frames read as thin lines and the glass becomes the feature. Against the grey schist the same black frames pick up the darker tones in the stone. The teal door is the one place colour is allowed to shout, and because it is the entrance it is the first and last thing visitors see. From the air, the black-framed glass, the pool and the reserve behind tie the whole house into its site.
